THE SHIRE LONDON WELCOMES THOMAS BJØRN AS HONORARY CAPTAIN

Thomas Bjørn The Shire London's Honorary Captain

LONDON, UK – As it approaches its 10th Anniversary celebrations this summer, The Shire London today welcomes Thomas Bjørn, European Ryder Cup Captain, as Honorary Captain for 2017-18.The 46-year old Dane will represent the golf club, which is located near Barnet in Hertfordshire, as momentum builds towards the 2018 Ryder Cup, due to be held from 28-30 September 2018 at Le Golf National close to Paris, France.

Speaking at The Shire London, Bjørn said: “I am very honoured to have been appointed Honorary Captain and to become an ambassador for The Shire London. It is the perfect golfing base for me in the UK with great practice facilities and the fantastic Ballesteros Masters Course. The Club has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and the Menai-Davis family are not only great hosts, but they are also passionate supporters of growing the game of golf”.

Denmark’s most successful golfer, Thomas Bjørn’s stellar career has included 15 wins and 94 top ten finishes to date on the European Tour. Twice runner-up in The Open Championship, and a three-time Ryder Cup player – always on the winning side – he was appointed Chairman of the European Tour’s Tournament Committee in 2007. He is a four-time Vice-Captain to the European Ryder Cup team, picked for the role by winning captains Bernhard Langer (2004), Colin Montgomerie (2010) and José-María Olazábal (2012), as well as by great friend Darren Clarke for the 2016 match at Hazeltine, Minnesota.

During his two-year Honorary Captaincy at The Shire London, Thomas Bjørn will each year host a new event, The Thomas Bjørn Trophy, the first of which will take place in September 2017. He will also use the club’s practice facilities and gym, as well as playing at the club’s spectacular 7,028 yard Ballesteros Masters Course, the UK’s only golf course fully designed by Severiano Ballesteros.

The Shire London, which has no traditional committees or club captains, has become one of the capital city’s most popular golfing venues in the ten years since it opened. “We could not be more proud that Thomas Bjørn is joining us here at The Shire London to make it his home club” said The Shire London’s Tony Menai-Davis. “It is a huge thrill for all of us connected with the club that such a successful and influential figure from world golf will be representing us for the next two years, and we look forward to seeing him around the club.

“To have the European Ryder Cup Captain based at The Shire London will be incredibly exciting, and like all golf fans we will be backing Thomas all the way as he builds his team in preparation for Paris in 2018. Go Team Europe!”

In 2018 Thomas Bjørn will become the first Dane, and the first Scandinavian to lead Europe when it returns to mainland Europe for the second time at Le Golf National. The Ryder Cup’s first appearance in mainland Europe also marked Bjørn’s debut as a player in the event, at Valderrama in Spain in 1997, where he went unbeaten for the weekend as Europe secured a thrilling victory.

His Team Captain that year was the charismatic Severiano Ballesteros, designer of the Ballesteros Masters Course at The Shire London. “It means a lot to me that my hero Seve designed the golf course at The Shire London” he said. “His legacy is everywhere in the world of golf, and with this year being the 20th anniversary of the European victory at Valderrama, which was also my Rookie appearance, the timing could not be more fitting. Being based at Seve’s course will inspire me in the build-up to my own captaincy.”

The Shire London will shortly announce details of The Thomas Bjørn Trophy2017, which the Dane will personally host, and which will be open to all golfers.

PLAY IN THE LONDON 9-HOLE CHAMPIONSHIP - EVENT NOW CLOSED

 London 9-hole championship

In a busy city where time feels as precious as money, today sees the announcement of a new golf tournament which recognises the growing trend towards a quick nine holes.

The event has been created jointly by England Golf, the sport’s amateur governing body, and the owners of London’s newest nine-hole golf course, near Northolt in north-west London. All proceeds will be donated to charity.

Friday October 23rd will see golfers of all ages competing in the first London 9 Hole Championship at the West London Golf Centre. The all-day event is open to men, women and children, with a maximum entry fee of £10.

50% of entry fees will go to the Breast Cancer Care charity, and 50% to the charity of the winner’s choice.

“Is nine holes the new eighteen? I think it might be” said the West London Golf Centre’s Cae Menai-Davis. “People certainly seem to be busier than ever, and maybe that’s why we have seen so many play here in the year since we opened our golf course.

“We devised the event in discussions with England Golf, who share our belief that golf is currently undergoing an image change for the better, and we hope that it will become a regular fund-raiser for Breast Cancer Care and other charities”.

 London 9-hole championship

“This is the first event of its kind in the area” said England Golf’s Jason Mitchell, the County Development Officer for golf in Middlesex. “We are breaking down the stereotype that golf is a segregated sport – it simply isn’t, any more. This new tournament is for anyone who can swing a golf club, and it will showcase how diverse golf has become.

“If you can manage nine holes this October, then please play in this event and help us to raise valuable funds in the fight against breast cancer!”

As well as the charity donation, the event’s winner can look forward to a free year’s membership at the golf centre plus a £100 voucher to spend at american golf superstores. The runner-up receives a fourball voucher for the prestigious Seve Ballesteros golf course at The Shire London, plus a £50 american golf voucher.

KIDS GO FREE IN OUR ANNIVERSARY GIFT!

WEDNESDAY 8TH JULY 2015

We're celebrating our first anniversary by introducing free golf for children!

And golfers have showered praise in the twelve months since our golf course opened for play.

West London Golf Centre, which opened its new 9-hole golf course on Saturday July 5th 2014, has introduced the free golf offer – which applies if the child is accompanied by an adult – in response to the high number of families which regularly take advantage of the high-quality facility.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the praise the golf course has received in its first year” said the centre’s Director, Ceri Menai-Davis. “And with the driving range and Dinosaur Adventure Golf also here, it’s no real surprise that local families have enjoyed having something new to do in the area.

“Hopefully, making our golf course free for youngsters to play on will prove popular with the local community, and well beyond. We’re trying to make it easy for young people to play golf. Our course is great for juniors, if they play from the forward tees, and it’s proving to be quite a challenge for the adults too!”

Junior golfers can also join the club to be able to play any time, with or without an adult present, for just £95.

Groups of golfers can also get a new deal if they play as a fourball, and green fees for casual visitors have been held at 2014 levels.

Other first-birthday presents for visitors to West London Golf Centre include new short game facilities, an expanded coffee bar and the addition of two large TV screens showing golf, football and Ashes cricket.

The full-length 9-hole West London Golf Centre course has attracted a lot of praise from golfers. Online reviews call it enjoyable and a tough challenge with excellent greens, with an average rating of 4.27 out of 5 on the influential Golfshake website.

FILM REVIEW – SEVE The Movie (Blu-ray / DVD)

 SEVE The Movie

The Shire London founder Tony Menai-Davis is thanked as a close friend in Seve Ballesteros's autobiography. SEVE The Movie is available to buy on DVD & Blu-ray from Monday 20th October - and here is our Review of this extraordinary documentary.

"Seve - The Movie" (Entertainment in Video, 20 October 2014) “Extraordinary and emotional – like the maestro himself” – The Shire London Golf Club

There is one moment of emotion so raw, in SEVE The Movie, that it may just leave a permanent scar on the hearts of all who loved Severiano Ballesteros – but the moment only adds to the power of this absorbing documentary.

In 2009, less than eighteen months before he succumbed to brain cancer, Seve was presented the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Lifetime Achievement award by his friend, Jose-Maria Olazabal.
Undergoing treatment for a malignant brain tumour and too ill to travel to the UK, he received the award at his home in Spain via a satellite TV link. He spoke bravely and, to warm applause, thanked the BBC and its audience.

But immediately after the ceremony, the two men shared a moment of pure love between two brothers in golfing combat – off-air, but not off-camera. That powerful, unguarded moment, which comes towards the end of SEVE The Movie, may just be the most heartbreaking you will ever see on film. It is the image which you will remember long after the documentary has ended.

SEVE The Movie verges into drama-doc territory, switching repeatedly between a beautifully-filmed reconstruction of the Spaniard’s youth, and archive footage of Ballesteros’s golfing career. Fans wanting to max out on Seve’s greatest moments may feel as if they wanted slightly more Ballesteros, and less of the film-within-a-film, but there’s no denying that Jose Luis Guttierez, who plays the young Seve, is a remarkable find, and the time spent retracing Seve’s journey towards a career as a professional golfer is both entertaining and revealing, showing how a man who could be equally charming and challenging developed as a fascinating if often slightly flinty character.

For golf fans, there’s plenty of footage of Seve’s five Majors, his heroics in The Ryder Cup (usually with Olazabal beside him), and of course a wealth of other action showing how this mercurial man came to dominate the sport in the late seventies and eighties. And although Seve’s later career as a successful golf course architect is not covered in the movie, visitors to his spiritual home in the UK, The Shire London Golf Club in north London where he designed his only UK golf course, will recognise the Spaniard’s uncompromising personality in every hole they play there.

Extraordinary and emotional – like the maestro himself – SEVE The Movie tantalises and leaves you wanting to spend more time with one of sport’s greatest personalities. Fittingly, as this iconic golfer, who for sheer charisma arguably surpassed golfing titans such as Nicklaus, Palmer and Woods, was only 54 when he died. We all wanted more time with Seve: but we have a superb tribute in this revealing documentary which will move you to tears of joy, regret and nostalgia at days gone by.

Shire Winter Fourball Offer

Golfers need not wait until December 25th to receive their seasonal gift from The Shire London.

The popular Hertfordshire golf club’s annual Winter deals have been announced, and they are available from as early as November 1st.

This year, a fourball can play the UK’s only Seve Ballesteros golf course from just £155 during the week including coffee & bacon rolls on arrival, 18 holes on the 7,028 Ballesteros Masters Course, and a Chef’s Special Meal afterwards in the clubhouse. This year’s Shire Winter Fourball price applies to Monday-Thursdays, rising slightly to £165 on Fridays, and is available from November to the end of March 2015.

For groups, the Shire Winter Society deal is a neatly-packaged golf day for twelve golfers or more, with the Organiser playing for free at the golf club, which is based slightly north of Barnet near the M25 /A1 intersection.

As well as coffee & bacon rolls, 18 holes and a Chef’s Special, the society also gets Nearest The Pin and Longest Drive competitions, a dedicated starter per group and a Private Dining area afterwards. Shire Winter Society prices are £35 per person on Mondays, £40 per person Tuesdays-Thursdays, and £45 per person on Fridays, and like the Fourball deal these special prices run from November to the end of March.

“Each winter we like to lay our cards on the table, and put some really good off-season offers out there” said the golf club’s Ceri Menai-Davis. “We offer the same warm welcome, great food and outstanding service as we do all year round, but at a very special price.

“Golfers love a deal, and we love golfers – so we’re all happy”.

Continued investment throughout 2014 has seen The Shire London grow and improve in its seventh full season, with remodelled bunkers and clubhouse updates.

Major 2014 improvements at The Shire London

Share Button

The Shire London, which features the UK’s only full Severiano Ballesteros course design, has announced the completion of a major series of course refurbishments and facilities upgrades for the 2014 golf season.

The announcement was made on April 9th, which would have been the great man’s 57th birthday.

The changes include new bunkering and greenside modelling work on The Ballesteros Masters Course to increase the challenge of what is already regarded as one of England’s most demanding tests of golf.

Other improvements cover everything from new sand, course furniture and flags to a renovated driving range. The club has even upgraded its coffee machines, TV sets and soft furnishings.

In all, the club – which is privately run by The Bridgedown Group – has invested over £120,000 in improvements both on and off the golf course.

“Every year we give you something new at The Shire London” said director Ceri Menai-Davis. “We are approaching our eighth anniversary here, and although the Group is building other golf courses across London, including the West London Golf Centre, the West London Links and The Dye London, The Shire London is our first-born, we are based at the club, and driving it ever more successfully forwards remains our number one priority.

“Golf needs to modernise. Some parts of the sport seem to be stuck in the past, but we never stay still. We are always creating something new for golfers. Speaking as both The Shire London and The Bridgedown Group, we have pledged to play our part in creating an exciting future for golf in England – and the next few years will see us deliver on that promise”.

A mixture of new and remodelled bunkers on four holes on the front nine – the 2nd, the 6th, the 8th and the 9th holes – is the most visible evidence that the club has been hard at work. Each of the four holes now presents an enhanced challenge to the golfer playing an approach shot. The 6th and 9th, both already tough par fours, are now significantly more challenging around the green. The 6th, which sets the golfer the demanding task of avoiding both a right hand side lake and a fairway-splitting burn from the tee, is now heavily bunkered around the green, including one with a 6ft vertical face. And on the 9th, a long uphill par four, golfers can no longer roll the ball onto the green as remodelled bunkers now guard the entrance, pushing right into the green. There is also a deadly pot bunker now hidden back left, to catch over-hit shots.

The risk-and-reward short par four 2nd hole now has new gorse beds, plus remodelled greenside bunkers and a newly-shaped green approach, making the start to the round even more challenging, and the par five 8th – one of The Shire’s links-style holes – now has even more of a links feel with three revetted bunkers guarding the front of the green.

Elsewhere on the golf course, The Shire London is implementing a major bunker programme, with new bases to all bunkers to be finished by next season. New sand is also going in all bunkers.

“These changes for the 2014 season have made the Ballesteros Masters Course even more compelling. At The Shire London our goal has always been to provide the best playing surfaces, the most exciting golfing challenge and the highest levels of customer satisfaction available at this price, anywhere in the south east, if not across the whole the United Kingdom” said Menai-Davis.

“We can’t dictate what represents value for money – our members and customers do that. But the feedback we are getting from all who come here is that, as each year goes by, The Shire London is getting better and better”.

On its driving range, the club has installed a new Southwest Greens playing surface, along with new range dividers and a new set of Srixon range balls. Drainage has been improved on the range itself, there are new teaching aids in The Shire Academy, and even a new shoe cleaning machine.

In the newly-redecorated clubhouse, there are new-look showering and wash room facilities along with new furniture and a refurbished functions suite which can now seat up to 250 guests. In the gym there are new fitness coaching sessions with Steve Harris, and The Shire London pro shop is stocked with new 2014 products from FootJoy, IJP and Oscar Jacobsen.

“Although we have been successful since our launch in 2007, you can’t rest on your laurels” said Menai-Davis. “Our members are already enjoying the improvements, and we invite all UK golfers to come and enjoy the warm welcome at The Shire London in 2014”.

London Gets UK's First Dye Designs Golf Course

Sawgrass-style signature hole on spectacular new course will thrill capital city's golfers

First UK project for one of world's most celebrated firms of golf architects

Construction scheduled to start in 2015 at Edgware, north London

EDGWARE, NORTH LONDON, ENGLAND ‐ One of the world's top golf architects has pledged to create a spectacular new challenge for London's golfers before the decade is out.

Today's announcement that an application has been submitted to start construction of The Dye London on land near Edgware, north London, means that celebrated US golf architects Dye Designs will be bringing their unique brand of creative golf course design to the UK for the first time.

The application has been submitted by the Menai-Davis family, who in 2007 opened The Shire London, featuring the UK's only Seve Ballesteros golf course, near Barnet, north London.

The Dye London will be an 18-hole Tour-style golf course, stretching to over 7,000 yards from the championship tees, but with many other teeing options to reduce the length of holes to encourage play by golfers of all standards. It will mimic the proven format at The Shire London, namely a small membership but with 7-day access for the public.

"Dye Designs is thrilled to announce our latest project, The Dye London, in Edgware, north London," said a Dye Designs spokesperson. "The course will feature a Dye signature island green, similar to the famous 17th at TPC Sawgrass. Dye-designed courses have hosted over fifty championships worldwide, and our team is looking forward tremendously to creating our first golf course in the United Kingdom."

"What a coup" said Tony Menai-Davis. "After working with Seve at The Shire London, we knew there was only one name of a similar stature we wanted to work with on this project ‐ Dye Designs. With Sawgrass, Kiawah Island, Whistling Straits and so many more globally-renowned golf courses bearing their name, we are every bit as excited as I'm sure all British golfers will be, to see what they create right here in London.

"The Dye London will compete in quality with other facilities in the south such as The Grove and Woburn, but at more accessible prices" he continued." Initial demand for The Dye London has been phenomenal, among those who knew that it was coming, and we hope to repeat the success of The Shire London, which launched with a fully-sold membership in 2007."

Dye Designs continues: "We are extremely excited to bring Dye golf to England. With over 50 years in the business of golf course design and construction, we understand how to build unique, environmentally sensitive, world-class projects that attract golfers from around the world. Our hands-on design approach allows us to be on the cutting edge of conservation and protect the environment by enhancing precious natural areas and wildlife habitats."

Dye Designs on the site in Edgware: "This is a beautiful piece of ground, with magnificent views across London, one of the world's great capital cities. The ambience and the setting are brilliant, but most of all it's the people involved which will make this project so special. We are passionate about what we have planned here."

"Golf is changing," continued Tony Menai Davis. "Many golfers these days, especially younger ones, don't want to be part of a traditional member's club, and prefer to play less frequently but at spectacular high-quality golf courses ‐ like the Tour venues they see on TV, or when they go on a golf holiday. We identified this when we approached Seve Ballesteros to design The Ballesteros Masters Course at The Shire London, which has become a huge success and is now working at capacity. We are proud that The Shire London is viewed by many, seven golf seasons after it opened, as the best-value quality golf facility in the Home Counties.

"We look forward to a time when the detailed facts about this project ‐ including accurate information about how it will enhance the surrounding area, and including matters regarding public access, biodiversity and other important environmental aspects ‐ are widely known and recognised.

"The Dye London will be a socially-responsible addition to, and indeed of great benefit to, the local community, whether you are a walker, a nature-lover, a horse rider, a local business or of course one of London's many golf-lovers."

The Dye London project is anticipated to begin construction in early 2015.

The Menai Davis family also recently opened The West London Golf Centre, a driving range and 9-hole golf course, near Northolt, north west London, and an 18-hole championship-style West London Links course is currently due to open nearby in 2017.
